Pronouncing Islay Celebrity Style

Islay News in stencil

Don't worry, I'm not going to write about the latest celebrity gossip here, this blog won't turn into OK ! or HELLO ! magazine. Well, unless it takes place on Islay, then I might make an exception. Nevertheless I've got to return to a celebrity I've mentioned on this blog before. Today I came across her name again, although in a slightly unexpected way.

There are many ways to explain how to pronounce Islay. The one I use in my Islay FAQ is Islay is pronounced ‘eye-la’. Almost all other explanations I've seen are similar, sometimes ‘eye-lah’ is also used. But when I read Raise a glass to the wee drams of Islay in the Daily Star (not exactly high brow either from the looks of it) I came about this unexpected (for me at least) explanation:

Islay, pronounced Isla (as in Isla Fisher) is about the same size as Corfu but has just 3,400 inhabitants.

So there you have it, now you know how to pronounce Islay. Provided you know who Isla Fisher is and how to pronounce her name. Well, there is some help in her IMDB biography:

Her first name is pronounced Eye-Lah.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
