Aftermath of the Heather Fire on Islay

Islay News in stencil

Over the last week or so I've mentioned the recent heather fire on Islay a couple of times, most recently in the Islay Airport Approach Video entry. I've linked to a few pictures, like these from Ron and two from Mark, aftermath 1 and aftermath 2. But what really hit home were a few pictures a friend from Islay sent me yesterday:

Above an impression of the fire while it was still burning. But more scary are the following two pictures, taken from just past the airport looking north (i.e. towards Bowmore). First a view left, in the distance you can just see Laggan Bay:

A burned and black landscape as far as the eye can see, just broken by the road. The other view is north east, looking very similar:

Very sad to see this, I guess this will have killed many ground nesting birds as it happened well into May (As far as I know some controlled burning is legal, but only until some time in early to mid April before the birds start nesting if memory serves me right).

Often nature can recover surprisingly quickly, so hopefully it will do so here as well!
