Friday Islay Picture #170 - Isle of Arran at Port Askaig Linkspan

Friday Islay Picture in stencil

Sorry, late again. Decided to post a ‘topical picture’ this evening, kind of. A follow up to yesterday's Islay Ferry Mishaps in a way. Earlier this evening I came across a picture on Graeme / Sea Pigeon's flickr stream, Inspecting the damage. It shows an engineer looking at the damage caused during the collision of the ‘Isle of Arran’ with the linkspan in Port Askaig. To see the contrast here's a picture I took in April 2009 of the same linkspan:

Picture of a Calmac ferry at the linkspan in Port Askaig, Islay

If you look at the metal strip/girder between the concrete and the linkspan (I'm not sure if it is part of the linkspan or the pier?) you can clearly see that originally is completely level and is now twisted and bent significantly. To me it looks like on the far right hand side it's lifted up at least 5-6 inch now.

For better comparisons you can either go to the picture I've uploaded to my flickr account or wait until Saturday morning when I'll upload a larger version of the (cropped) picture above to the Islay Pictures photoblog.

That's it for tonight, time for bed soon. Good night, have a great weekend!
