Tall Ships Visit Port Ellen, Islay

Islay Events written in stencil

This week up to 20 tall ships taking part in the Tall Ship Races were expected to visit Islay. Having grown up in Bremen, Germany, which was regularly visited by tall ships I had hoped to hear of a great display in Port Ellen. Disappointingly it seems only a handful of ships did turn up in the end, so there wasn't as much to see as I had hoped. A friend from Islay sent me a few pictures, starting with the Pogoria from Poland:

With the lower than expected numbers sadly the local events weren't as well attended as they should have been after all the efforts by the organising team. Here's another view of the bay with a few tall ships and some yachts:

As you can see the weather was fantastic, so I don't understand why some of the expected ships didn't turn up. The last picture I have for today is unfortunately slightly out of focus, but it shows a nice ship:

A few more pictures can be found in the Ileach flickr photostream in the Tall Ships in Port Ellen set. I can't make out if it was one of the ones from Port Ellen, but it seems a tall ship also stopped off Portnahaven.
