Islay Blogging Roundup #215

Islay Blogging Roundup in stencil

Well, well, finally another Islay blogging roundup. The last one was almost a month ago. With my two week Islay summer holiday this shouldn't be a too big surprise though. Having finally fully unpacked and documented The Islay Loot June 2012 I think it's time to get back to it. Here are a few blog entries with an Islay (or Jura, or Colonsay) connection from the last few weeks:

From Singapore and Islay we get The Scotland Chronicles: A Tribute to Islay - With 3 Feis Ile Bottlings!, a follow up to The Scotland Chronicles: Whisky Tourism: Isle of Islay Part 1 - Port Ellen and the South of Islay and The Scotland Chronicles: Whisky Tourism: Isle of Islay Part 2 - Bowmore, Caol Ila and Kilchoman. Bozzy tastes the Berry's Own Selection Bowmore 1987 21yo…

On the Bruichladdich news/blog pages we find Kilchoman Win Beach Rugby 2012 and that Bruichladdich Distillery awarded Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor, 2012. Rachel of Whisky for Girls had A Close Encounter with Malt Whisky followed by the Whisky For Girls Song.

Not sure if this falls under photography or whisky, Sandy Young (who is a photographer) writes Angels’ Share get their hands on more whisky!, which Ron also picks up on in Story From Award Winning Film Becomes Reality after coming Back From Our Scotland Holiday.

Hope I'm getting this right, I believe they are from Sweden, the S/Y Bird of Passage visited recently at Laphroaig and Lagavulin on Islay. Some might remember him from his time on Islay, at least on his blog you can now read about The Return of Whisky Guy Rob.

Frank from Germany has a few entries about an Islay visit with Islay, Tag 5-7, Islay, Tag 4, Laphroaig, Islay, Tag 3 – Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Japaner und Kultur, Islay, Tag 2 and Islay Festival (Feis Ile) 2012 – Tag 1. A French or Belgian (not sure) traveller has some nice entries, Oban – Islay, Islay (with a fab picture of Obelix on Islay) and Islay – Edimbourg. The Islay Fisher has 2012 with Ruantallain Estate Jura.

I think this might be the same group I had the video of recently kayaking the islands, some great pictures in Islay - Oronsay - Colonsay - Jura - part 1, Islay - Oronsay - Colonsay - Jura - part 2, Isla - Oronsay - Colonsay - Jura - part 3 and Islay - Oronsay - Colonsay - Jura - part 4.

The local bloggers have been busy as well, Justin had three entries with I just took a shortcut through a field…, Summer visitors to the whisky island… and …crunchier than a stack of poppadums. Kate Hannett has a rather different topic in her thoughts in Volunteer needed urgently.

The summer break has now arrived, but before then Islay's schools were quite busy: Port Ellen Go Golfing after the Scottish Education Awards - Port Ellen Primary and the Fourth Green Flag for Port Ellen Primary. On their Our Learning Blog we find news of the Leavers Assembly after a Beach Picnic and Beach Clean and some Proper poetry. Also of note Incredible Ileachs Win Science Award. Over at Keills We love the blocks! and learn with the Adding Adder and Subtraction Snake.

The bird- and wildlife: On the Islay Birds I managed to make a rare contribution with a male Hen Harrier, Michal followed up with the female counterpart. Michal also spotted an Otter at Saligo and Jim had a Little Egret waiting for the ferry in Kennacraig. The Islay Natural History Trust blog among other things had Leopard Slug (Limax maximus) - Martin Armstrong, RSPB Moth Extravaganza, Visit from Port Charlotte Pre Fives, a Rainbow over Port Charlotte this evening, a Sallow Kitten and A pink cloud over Bowmore. John Armitage has a Routine.....but not by choice! and Crossbill cacophony! 12.6.2012.. Gordon Yates experienced some Islay Magic before he went Home Again.

The pictures. LivingRoom Whisky brings us Islay – A Week in Photographs, looking back at Feis Ile. Donald Feist is back on Islay and brings us Kilchoman mono. A picture with a message, Feorlean brings us Ruined Farm, Islay. Mark Unsworth has great picture and an interesting story how he got it in his latest Image of the week (Trying to stay dry). In his gallery we find Malt Kiln, Bowmore Distillery, The Paps of Jura, Saligo Bay and Craighouse, Isle of Jura to name a few. Kim has been paddling in Bowmore. A different type of picture comes from Bobbi with a sketch of Bowmore, Islay, Scotland. From my own Islay Pictures photoblog I think I'll go for The Ruin of Kilchoman Church at 3:30am and Dog Playing in a Rainy Machir Bay, Isle of Islay.

That's all for the return of the Islay blogging roundup. For the bigger picture go to the Scottish Roundup, most recently with Music, Film and Scotland’s Future and So what did you learn at school this week?. Good night!

Sharing and discussing. Opening up the discussion. Have your say:
