Islay Walking Week 2014 programme available
Almost exactly two months to go now until the WalkIslay 2014 Islay Walking Week. As usual it will take place in April, this year it happens to be the week before Easter, going into the Easter weekend. As in previous years there are a variety of walks again, from easy to strenous:
For the full programme head over to the Visit Islay Jura website, where you can also download the Walk Islay 2014 Leaflet as PDF. There are 11 walks to choose from, taking place on Islay (of course) as well as neighbouring Jura, Colonsay, possibly Oronsay and even rarely visited Texa.
After the great success last year (admittedly we had perfect weather for it) there will be another opportunity to climb one of the Paps of Jura for the amazing views from Beinn a’Chaolais. If you think you're fit enough to get to the summit (it is a strenous walk) I can only recommend going.
On Islay itself there are a variety of interesting walks. Two ‘distillery walks’ take place on Thursday at Ardbeg and Laphroaig. Those wanting to climb to the top of Islay can climb up Beinn Bheigier, with 491m the highest hill on Islay. I haven't been up there for a while, so I think it's time for a return. Other walks take in Dunlossit, Kilchoman and Kilchiaran.
And finally there will be another excursion to Islay's rarely visited neighbour Texa, something I'm very much looking forward to. Getting there is an adventure in itself:
