The Alternative Islay Half Marathon

The annual Islay Half Marathon is a big event in Islay's sporting calendar, the next one coming up on the 1st of August this year. It has been around since 1986, following a circular route from Bowmore out to Islay Airport via the High Road and back on the Low Road. After all those years it now has competition:

Members of the small 100° Proof Whiskyclub from Belgium as well as a competitor from Islay completed the Islay ‘Alternative’ Half Marathon in March. Their linear route had the same starting point (i.e. Bowmore), but past Port Ellen, Laphroaig and Lagavulin took them to Ardbeg.

On their run they were joined by Jim Lutomski, the artist and bicycle repair man from Port Ellen. The winner was J'O in 1:41:02, closely followed by Jim Lutomski 3 minutes later.

During their visit to Islay they not only completed their half marathon, they also visited the distilleries (no surprise there) including Bruichladdich and Bunnahabhain. The had a whisky tasting at Finlaggan and stopped in Portnahaven. While all the text on the website is in Flemish/Dutch I think the pictures speak for themselves.

PS: If you think the 100° Proof Whiskyclub sounds familiar then you're right. I've written about them before and linked to their Islay Anno... project. I suspect this won't be the last time I link to them, I wonder what they will come up with next?
