Islay Finalists at For Argyll Awards

Islay News in stencil

It's Christmas evening today, so I could post some kind of Christmas greetings. But then again that's fairly boring and everyone is doing it. Instead I think I'll point out the Islay candidates who have made it into the final of the For Argyll awards 2009. But before I get to that: Merry Christmas!

There were a lot of nominations and a lot of them were for Islay, the final 2009 For Argyll Awards: Nominations update shows them all. Not all of them made it to the final, as to be expected with strong competition from the mainland.

Let's start with Islay's closest neighbour, Jura. In the Best Tourism Initiative the Jura Passenger Ferry made it into the final four. A strong contender for the Best Environmental Initiative should be the Islay Energy Trust with the Sound of Islay tidal energy project.

For the Best Community Initiative the Finlaggan Centre Development on Islay is a worthy finalist. The Best Homecoming Event sees the Islay Festival & Homecoming Parade in the final five, that looks like a strong field. To my surprise the festival didn't make it to the Best Major Event though, in fact no Islay event made it in this category.

However, there are two Islay finalists in the Best Activity Website category, the Islay Shipping Blog and the Islay Wilderness Guide. Guess what, the same also applies to the Best Wildlife Website, where we see the Islay Birds blog and the Islay Birding site.

Finally The Ileach is one of the three finalists in the Best Local Newspaper category.

Voting commences on Thursday, Christmas Day and will finish at midnight on 31/Dec/2009, over the next few days I'll try to further introduce some of the Islay contenders.

Merry Christmas!
