Islay Walking Week 2011 Heads Up

Islay Events written in stencil

With just over two months to go (two months and a week to be precise) I think it's about time that I write a bit more about this year's WalkIslay Islay walking week. As many will know I've been a regular visitor to the walking weeks since 2003, so much that I've also created my own Islay Walking Week page (which is now in urgent need of an update). Anyway, while first hints about the programme have been public for a month now more details have been confirmed today:

I think most importantly the excursion to Texa, the island off Lagavulin, is going ahead, weather permitting of course. I understand StormCats will help with the transport, another reason to look forward to it. Unfortunately the numbers for this walk have to be limited to 30, so if you'd like to join contact Ian Brooke sooner rather than later. This walk is a first for WalkIslay.

There will also be a few old favourites or variations of them: On Wednesday we will have another excursion to Colonsay, tide and weather permitting there might be a repeat of the popular walk across the Strand to Oronsay. There will be a repeat of a very nice walk around Ardnave and then on to Sanaigmore for those who want to continue. In a variation to previous walks there will be a circular walk from Bunnahabhain to the caves at Bholsa and the lighthouse at Rhuvaal.

Also a few new walks, including a longer walk from Kintour across the south east of Islay to Kynagarry. On Jura we will walk on the Inver Estate, visiting Lochan Gleann Astaile and learn about the new hydro electric scheme. To start the week will walk in the Bridgend area visiting Loch Cam and Loch Skerrols, two days later a walk will go along the Burma Road and then visit Laggan Point. Another new walk will go from Bunnahabhain to Ballygrant via Staoisha and Balulive.

As in previous years I'm preparing an illustrated version of the full programme, I'm aiming to have this complete no later than Saturday 12/Feb. It will be uploaded to the WalkIslay page and probably a few other places.

Before I forget it the dates: Saturday 16/Apr/2011 to Friday 22/Apr/2011. See you there?
