Islay Book Festival 2011 this week!

Islay Events written in stencil

Left it a bit late, but if you don't have any plans for the first weekend in September yet I know just the thing on Islay: The sixth Islay Book Festival takes place in Port Ellen this week. As usual there's something for both adults and children:

For the adults the best known writer will probably be Ruth Rendell, known for her thrillers and murder mysteries including Chief Inspector Wexford. A rather different type of author is Kenneth Cox of Glendoick, who is also author of various gardening books. The lineup is completed by Alistair Moffat and Jess Smith.

For the children I should think one of main attraction should be local Islay author Hannah Middleton (whose life story has been snapped up by Hollywood). The other authors include Debi Gliori, Allan Burnett, John Fardell, return visitor Cathy MacPhail and for both adults and children Jess Smith.

I remember several authors praising the hospitality and in particular the fantastic food over the last few years, this year shouldn't be any different thanks to ‘St John’s Church, Port Ellen, whose fantastic cooks provide excellent home baking and light lunches throughout the Festival weekend.’

I hope everyone will have a great weekend and festival again this year, writers and readers alike!
