60 Days to Spot The Barrel

Picture of a barrel with posters promoting the 'Spot the Barrel' competition

In last Saturdays Islay Hotel First Floor Views entry I pointed out a cask (or in this context a barrel) standing on Frederick Crescent in Port Ellen. As of today there are exactly 2 months left to submit your entry for one of the most unusual competitions Islay has ever seen. That competition is obviously the Spot The Whisky Barrel challenge.

The competition went live in late November 2007, having been thought up by Roland and Kathleen. In case you're not familiar with it a short description: On the first day where the weather permits it after the competition closes on the 14th of August 2008, a barrel will be dropped (on a parachute) from a plane flying along the coast near Port Ellen, Islay. It will then glide down and at some point land in the water. A GPS device will record the position of the barrel after being in the water for 5 minutes. The person who has correctly (or closest) predicted the co-ordinates of the barrel will win up to £250,000. There are also various runner up prizes, including rare whiskies.

That's about it. For further details visit the Spot The Whisky Barrel website. Then either submit your entry online or, if you happen to be on Islay, spot the barrel in Port Ellen and visit Allison at the ‘Islay Hotel’ site office. She'll also be able to answer questions you might have about the competition (or the hotel).
