Islay Nominations for ForArgyll Awards - First Ideas

Some of you might remember the Islay successes at the ForArgyll Awards 2008. After a rather short notice nomination campaign there were a lot of Islay nominations which made it to the voting stage. So why mentioning all that again now? Simple: Earlier this week For Argyll published an entry 2009 For Argyll Awards: get ready. In other words, it's time to think about Islay nominations for this years competition.

Last years 24 categories have been reduced to a sensible 12 categories this year, hopefully we can find Islay candidates for most or even all of them. More detailed descriptions/ criteria will become available on Friday, but to start with these are the categories:

The deadline for nominations is midnight on 23/Dec/2009, so there's a little bit of time to come up with suggestions. I'm sure you and me will come up with a few more, here are a few first ideas I can come up with this evening:

For the Best Environmental Initiative I think the Islay Energy Trust with the Tidal Project would be a good nomination. Under Best Major Event I personally would list the Islay Beach Rugby tournament and even though it was a specialist event the Education2020 Unconference 2009. I suspect many will also go for the Feis Ile - Islay Festival of Malt and Music. I'm not sure if it best fits under Best Activity Website or Best Wildlife Website, but from what I hear the Islay Birds blog has a very good standing in the birdwatching community.

He won it last year, so Ron's Islay Weblog is probably a good bet for the Best Community Website while The Ileach should be a strong contender for the Best Local Newspaper. For the Best Arts Event Programme I was thinking of the Islay Book Festival to start with, assuming literature qualifies under arts.

These are just a few first ideas I can come up with this evening, let's make sure there's a good showing for Islay in the nominations and following on from that in the votings.
