Islay Blogging Roundup #103

Islay Blogging Roundup in stencil

That's my long weekend before Christmas over, finishing with some fantastic twilight (aka gloaming) this evening. Luckily (probably like many others) I only have a very short working week ahead before going on a (short) Christmas break. Finally Islay and Jura caught up with most of the rest of the UK and had some snow today. From what I understand most of it is gone again now after rain moved in this afternoon. So what have the blogs made of it and what have they been writing about Islay, Jura and Colonsay this week?

Ron picked up on it yesterday when he wrote Snow on Islay Expected. When it duly arrived Mark sent him pictures of Bruichladdich Distillery in the Snow and Bowmore Christmas Lights today. Looking at it from the mainland were Adrian and Alison of Muasdale Holidays Reports, on Thursday they reported a Beautiful sunny day, followed by Snow on Jura today.

While I can read a few words of Swedish it isn't good enough to fully understand what the recipe for Whiskyknäck ca 60 st is for. It looks like some kind of sweet, but more importantly one of the ingredients is Laphroaig (which admittedly you can replace with another whisky as long as it is smoky/peaty. In other words most likely an Islay malt.).

Speaking of whisky, Bruichladdich has finally joined the ranks of the Twitter users, you can find them under Bruich_Sales. The Bruichladdich Blog in the meantime announced the First Own-Malted Islay Spirit and some upcoming Repairs.

The WHISKYhost Blog has the Battle of the Kilcho-men! John Hansell asks Where are you?, so come on, Islay bloggers and blog readers, tell him where you are. I have.

Now let's go sailing a bit: I'm not sure what Cruceros Glenans means (apart from that it seems to have to do with cruises as in sailing), but they seem to be sailing around the UK and Ireland at the moment. Earlier in the week I think they were in Scalasaig en Colonsay before De vuelta a Irlanda, passing through the Sound of Islay. It looks like they paid Port Ellen en la isla de Islay a visit last year.

I've mentioned the Australian visitors in the Islay Blogging Roundup #102, this week Day 4 – Islay appeared on Sheol’s Weblog. Day 5 – Glasgow mentions their departure from Islay.

Birdwatching. The Islay Birds blog has a great picture of the Little Egret with a Heron, helps with size comparison! Earlier there was a probably sighting of a Gyr Falcon and another picture of the Little Egret, together with the Geese count numbers. John Islay Birder Armitage writes about Wintering birds and Geese counts against military jet target practice. On Islay Wildlife he mentions Newly proposed areas for porpoise conservation, which include the Sound of Jura.

Last week I started with the pictures, this week I will finish with the pictures again as usual: On Mark Unsworth's Islay Photography Gallery my favourites this week were Sunset through the Reeds 2, Reflections 2 and Golden Sands. From Ron's picture blog (Happy Birthday, one year this weekend!) I think Lone Stag and Snow on Islay Hills is the best.

On Meruby's Photoblog my favourite beach is featured in Kilchoman Beach, Islay (1/4) in a great picture. The Saltire on the beach is great as well, as is this sunset. From my own Islay Pictures photoblog I think I'll have to go for Rhuvaal Lighthouse on the Horizon and Bright Sun and Dark Clouds at Machir Bay, Isle of Islay as my favourites.

I think that's it for this week. The next roundup will follow after Christmas, possibly not on the Sunday as usual, but on the Monday (I'm travelling on the Sunday, so might not have enough time). Of course there's still the usual reference to the Scottish Roundup, this week with Hot music, cooling weather, warming climate. Good night!
