Friday Islay Picture #237 - Star Trails at Saligo Bay

Friday Islay Picture in stencil

For quite some time I've been admiring star trails pictures, the quite amazing pictures of the trails the stars leave in the night sky with long exposures. Recently I learned about how to create them and started to create my own. The very first one I published were Star Trails over Aldermaston Wharf. But my main ambition was to get some of these pictures from Islay. During my recent visit I worked on my first two attempts. The first one I published on Monday with Star Trails over Kilchoman, Isle of Islay. The second one I thought might be worth this week's Friday Islay picture:

This is of course Saligo Bay on the west coast of Islay, looking north. You might recognise the silhouette of the ‘Opera House Rocks’ on the horizon towards the right. The single steady light on the horizon, just right of centre, is the lighthouse at Dubh Artach. You can make out a few shooting stars if you look closely, I remember seeing at least one during the hour I waited for the camera to finish taking the pictures.

As usual I will post a larger version of this picture on the Islay Pictures photoblog on Saturday morning, I hope you'll enjoy it again then. As I said, these were my first attempts, I've still got a lot to learn and hope to take and post a few more over the coming years. For some other peoples work you might want to check out the Startrails page/group on Facebook.

And with that, good night and have a great weekend!

Sharing and discussing. Opening up the discussion. Have your say:
